{"id":38,"date":"2005-08-07T12:34:00","date_gmt":"2005-08-07T02:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gedda.info\/?p=38"},"modified":"2014-03-29T13:18:42","modified_gmt":"2014-03-29T03:18:42","slug":"deer-park-the-next-generation-firefox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gedda.info\/?p=38","title":{"rendered":"Deer Park: the next generation Firefox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pulled down the <a href=\"http:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/devnews\/index.php\/2005\/07\/12\/deer-park-alpha-2-released\/\">Deer Park Alpha 2<\/a> release of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/products\/firefox\/\">Firefox<\/a> Web browser over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m using Deer Park on my G3 iBook running Mac OS X 10.3 (I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll get around to upgrading to Tiger one day) and from what I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve experienced so far the future of Firefox looks even more promising.<\/p>\n<p>A few quick observations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After two days no crashes or hangs yet so it seems to be stable.<\/li>\n<li>No significant user interface changes (well, for the Mac version anyway)<\/li>\n<li>A generally more responsive interface and smoother rendering than 1.0.4 (sorry, haven&#8217;t tried 1.0.6)<\/li>\n<li>The new tab drag-and-drop works OK and includes a little virtual arrow to show where the tab will slot in<\/li>\n<li>My <a href=\"http:\/\/sage.mozdev.org\/\">Sage<\/a> blog aggregator is a Firefox 1.x extension, and, as hinted at by the release notes, didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work with Deer Park (it loaded but didn&#8217;t do anything)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a (very low res) screenshot:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Deer Park\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gedda.info\/wp-content\/deer_park1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/projects\/deerpark\/releases\/alpha2.html\">release notes<\/a>, some of the changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Software update system to streamline product upgrades (currently disabled)<\/li>\n<li>Faster browser navigation with improvements to back and forward button performance<\/li>\n<li>Drag and drop reordering for browser tabs<\/li>\n<li>Improvements to popup blocking<\/li>\n<li>Better support for Mac OS X (10.2 and greater)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I can vouch for two of those new features, but only time will tell if the &#8220;several security enhancements&#8221; result in a safer Internet experience.<\/p>\n<p>So go ahead and grab a copy of Deer Park and help drive open standards on the Internet.
