{"id":65,"date":"2005-12-05T20:01:59","date_gmt":"2005-12-05T10:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gedda.info\/?p=65"},"modified":"2014-03-29T13:34:56","modified_gmt":"2014-03-29T03:34:56","slug":"sun-2-ibm-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gedda.info\/?p=65","title":{"rendered":"Sun 2, IBM 0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m finally getting around to blogging about somethng really freaky that happened back in August.<\/p>\n<p>I seems like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aec.gov.au\">Australian Electoral Commission<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrm.qld.gov.au\/\">Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines<\/a> have quite a bit in common. How&#8217;s this for a coincidence:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Both have used IBM&#8217;s Dynix Unix systems for core transaction workloads<br \/>\n&#8211; Both will migrate to Java on Sun<br \/>\n&#8211; Both will be using Solaris in place of Dynix<br \/>\n&#8211; Both are government departments<br \/>\n&#8211; Both case studies were on the front page of Computerworld<br \/>\n&#8211; Both were unrelated but published within a week of each other<\/p>\n<p>Check out the articles <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com.au\/index.php?id=353463869\">here (AEC)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com.au\/index.php?id=580316653\">here (Qld resources).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the freakyness. There are probably other similarities, but none so obvious. I wonder if IBM will bother to maintain Dynix or just let its customers be eaten by Sun or HP rather than cannibalise them. When in doubt cannibalise, I say. For it is better to cannibalise than to lose. Perhaps IBM could shed some light on the subject? What&#8217;s the migration path from legacy Dynix systems?<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the real winners here are the end-users who &#8211; good, bad, right or wrong &#8211; are exercising their fundamental right of competition.
